One of the things I do enjoy about lockdown is the excuse to get stuck into some good books. I’ve recently been following Anika of Chapters of May on Instagram and she has given me some great ideas for reading inspiration.
If you’re a book worm like me, I thought I would share some of the books I’ve been enjoying recently. These are a mixture of new releases and old favourites.
City of Girls by Elizbeth Gilbert.
A riotous canter through the streets of New York in the 1940s following the life of young Vivian as she works as a costume designer in her eccentric aunts theatre and adventures she has with the fascinating people she meets in this world.
Pretending by Holly Bourne
This is a novel about the strangeness of the way we present ourselves online, particularly in the context of dating. The main character goes out of her way to create a new dating personality for herself, and it quickly gets out of hand…
This Lovely City by Louise Hare
Set in London in the early 1950s it centres around the life of young musician Lawrie, fresh off Empire Windrush.
Postcards by Annie Proulx
If you’re a fan of Steinbeck and the stories he told of migrant workers in the early 20th Century, you’ll find this book addictive. It’s told partially via postcards which are the only means of communication for the main characters. Completely absorbing, I couldn’t put it down. It’s still one of my favourite reads.
The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary
If you enjoy fun and sparkling romcoms from the likes of Lindsey Kelk and Jojo Moyes you’ll love this hilarious romp of a novel. Set in London, with two fascinating main characters, it’s great escapism and brilliantly entertaining.
Tangerine by Christine Mangan
If you’re fan of the Talented Mr Ripley series you’ll love this thriller set in the streets of Tangier, Morrocco. A sinister tale of how a female friendship can become dangerously dependant.
