Spoonflower Design Challenges

Over the last month I decided to start participating in the Spoonflower Design Challenges. It’s been a great way to build up my surface pattern design portfolio and it’s also pushed me to create designs for themes that I wouldn’t normally choose.

I thought I would share a few of the recent designs I’ve created, as well as some others that I created along the way. You can also see them on my Spoonflower gallery.

Gnomes

Components of Gnomes

Components of Gnomes

I created this design by looking at the objects normally associated with garden gnomes such as mushrooms, fishing rods, beards and flowers. It was a fun print to create, considering I’m really not a fan of gnomes normally! To begin with I did some pencil sketches of the details I wanted to capture, then I scanned these into Procreate to make the final print and add colour.

Take A Hike

Vintage Hiking Stuff

Vintage Hiking Stuff

This design was inspired by vintage hiking equipment from the 1960s. I gave it a simple colour scheme, including mustard yellow, one of my favourite colours! This design started as hand drawn designs using fineliner pens, and then I added colour using photoshop.

Brecon Beacons Wildlife

I also created this print inspired by Brecon Beacons wildlife when I went on a hiking holiday there in Spring 2018. It was created in a similar way to my other hiking print, with hand drawn designs in fineliner pen, and then colour added in photoshop.

Stone Fruit

Plum Tree

I created this print design using oil pastels and watercolour. I love the texture that these two materials together create. I’ve also added the original painting to my portfolio gallery too.

Peachy Leaves

As I enjoyed this style so much, I also created a repeat print of peaches too. Such yummy summer colours in this one!
