Spring Florals Workshop at Micklems Farm
In March I ran a new workshop at Micklems Farm in Knowl Hill, Berkshire. It was a beautiful spring day and flowers were starting to bloom in their gardens.
Micklems Farm is a 17th century grade 2 listed property surrounded by characterful farm buildings set in mature gardens and overlooking open countryside - a wonderful environment to inspire creativity. They have a range of tutors teaching workshops on their site, from painting to jewelry making, ceramics, calligraphy and more.
I wanted to teach a watercolour florals workshop that included exploring the beautiful gardens and collecting inspiration for our watercolour compositions. I am teaching 2 Spring Florals workshops in March and April and I will be returning in August to teach a Summer watercolour workshop inspired by the flowers in season.
The workshop started with a walk in the gardens where we picked a selection of seasonal flowers and greenery. We then returned to the barn workshop space that they have on site which is perfectly set up for teaching creative workshops.
The team at Micklem’s farm also kindly picked out some extra flowers for us to use in our compositoins and we created our own bouquets in glass vases as references for the workshop paintings.
I then did a demonstration of how to mix a colour palette and some examples of quick and expressive floral paintings.
After a morning coffee break with some homemade cakes, we continued working on floral watercolour paintings inspired by the flowers we had picked that morning.
After a lunch break I did a further demonstation on how to plan compositions and pick out details to focus on in their final paintings.
It was wonderful to see my students confidence build through the class as many of them had never painted in watercolour before.
